Emojis play an important role in bringing emotions into context. While you can always make your text easier to read and comprehend, emoji bring in the fine texture that helps you set the mood of the content. In Notion, emojis can make your content look more aesthetically pleasing by introducing a visual aspect that also builds a narrative.

Here are the 4 steps to adding an emoji in Notion:
1. Open the Notion page
You can either create a new Notion page or an existing page where you want to add the emoji.
You can find the existing pages by accessing them through the Notion folders in the left side of your screen or create one by clicking on the “+” icon next to an existing Notion folder.
2. Set the default emoji color at the top of the page
You will discover later that inserting emojis is easy but the process of adding emojis of the preferred color is a bit tricky. You can select the Notion emoji skin tone, only at the top of the page by setting the page icon.
The default emoji color is set to yellow but should you want to set a skin tone, you need to do so at the page icon level. This gets set as the default for the rest of your page.
However, inserting emojis of different colors within the same page is possible. But for that, you need to keep switching the color at the page icon level.
To set the right emoji skin tone, click on the “Add Icon” option at the top of the Notion page and click on the “🖐️” icon visible in the emoji tray, as highlighted in the image below.
3. Initiate the emoji block
Alright, now that you have decided on the emoji color, it’s time to add emojis to the text in Notion. To do that, click where you want the emoji to appear and type “/emoji”.
This prompts Notion to display the “emoji” block, as displayed in the below image.
Click on it to see the emoji tray, which displays the list of all Notion emoji icons that you can choose from.
4. Click on any emoji from the tray
Click on any emoji to add it to the Notion page.

What’s the shortcut for Notion emojis?
You can initiate the Notion emoji tray with the shortcut ctrl + cmd + space on Mac, or the “Windows key” + “.” on Windows. Another shortcut that works both on Windows and Mac is the “:” key. Simply hit the “:” key and start typing the name of the emoji you want to insert. Notion will shortlist emojis in the tray that meet the description.
How to add a custom emoji to Notion?
You can add a custom emoji to Notion by clicking on the “Add Icon” option at the top of the page and then clicking on “Custom”. Next, Notion will display a screen where you can either upload the emoji and paste a link to import the emoji from.
It's worth noting that Notion does not support adding custom emojis within text, you can add them only in the "Add icon" section. Notion allows adding only preset emojis in text.
How to add emoji to a Notion table?
The only way to initiate the emoji tray inside the Notion table is by using the “:” keyboard shortcut. Hit the “:” key and type the name of the emoji that you want to insert. Notion will display the list of emoji icons that meet the one-word description the best.
How to add a Notion emoji to the page heading?
You can’t use blocks in the heading of your Notion page but that does not mean that you can’t insert emojis. To add an emoji to the heading, simply hit the “:” key and start typing the name of the emoji that you want to show there, Notion will immediately display all emojis that meet the description. You can click on the preferred emoji in the list to insert it into the heading.
How to create a Notion callout without an emoji?
You can remove the default emoji from the Notion callout block by clicking on the 6-dot icon and then clicking on the “Icons” option as highlighted below
Finally, click on the “Remove” option in the last screen that Notion displays to get rid of the icon from your call-out block.
