Whether it’s for making your content look aesthetically pleasing or to abide with your Notion blog’s editorial guidelines, you would want to center align text.
Doing that allows for an even split of white space and makes content easy on the eyes.
Given that Notion provides only three built-in font styles, you need to make the best use of all other design possibilities to keep your audience engaged.
Even though Notion comes with cool markdown features, there is no straightforward way to center text. There are no shortcuts or dedicated blocks that cater to this feature.
However, there are a few workarounds that we will discuss in this guide. We will use our guide on Notion links as a reference throughout this article.
Let’s get started.
Method 1: Using the Spacebar
The easiest method of center aligning text in your Notion page is using the spacebar.
Let’s put this method into use — We will center align the H3 - Social Media Promotion in our sample page.
1. Place the cursor to the left of text
2. Hit the spacebar till the text appears to be at the center
3. Place your cursor to the right of the text and add the maximum number of spaces
4. Check the character count of spaces both to the left and the right of text
Adding an equal number of spaces to both ends of the text is the sureshot way to ensure that the text is perfectly aligned in the center.
You can check that by using the free character counter tool. First, copy all the spaces to the left of the text, paste it in the tool, and record the count. Next, repeat the steps for the spaces to the right.
If the spaces on the left are more than those on the right, add more spaces to the right while removing a few from the left.
In our example, both left and right spaces count are 55, but remember that it’s the pixel width that counts. In other instances, one side might show 55 spaces while the other shows 54. In this case, you can’t distribute the whitespace equally and that is why this method is not completely accurate.
We will discuss progressively more accurate methods in the subsequent section.
Method 2: Using the 3-Column block
In this method, we will center align the text by placing the text block between two empty blocks. It’s quite similar to the process of adding a clickable button in Notion.
Here’s how you can do that.
1. Insert a 3-column block
Type “/column” and click on the 3 columns option as demonstrated in the image below.
This will add three columns to your Notion page as indicated in the image below.
2. Add the text to be centralized in the middle column
3. Stretch out the central block to align text in the center
You can click and drag the lines as displayed in the image below.
You might need to count the spaces as we did while discussing the previous method but the number of spaces to be adjusted would be fewer, making this a slightly more accurate method of centralizing text in Notion.
Method 3: Using Block Equation
The third method of center aligning text in Notion is by using the Block equation block.
Here’s how it works:
1. Turn the text or header block into a Block equation
- Click on the six-dots icon next to the text you want to centralize
- Click on the drop-down: Turn into
- And select the Block equation option as demonstrated in the image below
The block turns into a different font and background style as visible in the image below.
The text is now center aligned but you might want to add spaces and increase the font size to make it look like H3 text.
Let’s implement those in the next steps.
2. Add spaces
Click on the text inside the block and add a tilde symbol between words as demonstrated in the image below.
Click on the Done button to add spaces between the words.
3. Increase text size
Since the text we are centralizing was an H3, we would want to keep it slightly larger in size than the remaining text. To increase the size, prefix the existing text with \LARGE, as displayed in the image below.
Make sure you use the backward slash.
One shortcoming of this method is that you can’t differentiate between H2s and H3s because the font size remains consistent.
In this article we covered three methods to central align text in Notion. While none of these methods are straightforward, they get the job done. Try them out to make your content look more aesthetic
