Spell check is an important feature of any platform that’s used for writing content. Well-structured text with perfect grammar makes your content look professional and trustworthy. Imagine creating a freelance writing portfolio and sharing it with your clients, just to learn later that you missed correcting some grammar errors that made your services look spammy! A spell check tool minimizes the possibility of that happening.
Notion is commonly used for writing content — in fact, it is better than Google Docs in some aspects. It also comes with a powerful spell check feature through Notion AI. As you will see later, it is super easy-to-use and provides edited text in no time.
So the next time you take class notes or update your blog in Notion, make sure you use Notion AI to spell check and catch those sneaky grammar errors.
Here’s how to do that:
1. Purchase Notion AI
The free version of Notion AI offers 40 free tokens, but you will run out of them very soon. Choose a Notion pricing plan that gives you enough tokens for all your content projects for the month. Notion enables the Notion AI feature automatically.
2. Navigate to the page where you want to use the spell check
You can create a new Notion page or go to a page that already has content that requires a spell check. For reference throughout the rest of this article, we will use the page displayed in the image below.
3. Write the first draft
As displayed in the below image, we have deliberately added a copy that is packed with spelling errors. This is to demonstrate the functioning of Notion spell check in the subsequent sections.
4. Highlight the text that you want to spell check and click on the “Ask AI” option
It’s time to use the power of Notion AI spell check. Start by highlighting the text that you want to edit. This will prompt Notion to display a menu bar — click on “Ask AI” in the menu bar.
This step prompts Notion to display a text box where you can type a new command for Notion AI or select from the list of preset commands.
5. Click on “Fix spelling & grammar”
Click on the “Fix spelling & grammar” option from the list of preset commands.
6. Hold on as Notion AI generates the corrected text and click on the “Replace text” option
Notion will take a couple of seconds to generate the edited copy without spelling errors.
Click on “Replace selection” to replace the unedited copy with the spell checked one. This step will automatically insert the edited text in place of the erroneous text.
7. Ensure consistency of the edited text
As the final step, check if the edited text is free of errors. Also, ensure that Notion AI did not alter the context and narrative while fixing grammar and spelling errors.
Here’s why your Notion spell check feature is not working
If your Notion spell check is enabled and right clicking on an incorrectly spelled word does nothing, try left-clicking on the word first before right-clicking on it again. It should go through. It's a weird workaround, not ideally by any means, but it should work.
If it doesn’t, highlight the whole word manually instead of double-clicking on it, and then right-click on the highlighted text. You should be able to see some spelling suggestions.
FAQs
Does Notion have spell check?
Notion offers a feature-rich spell check capability through its Notion AI module. With Notion spell check, you can automatically fix blocks of text instead of fixing each word. You can also replace erroneous text with the edited text with the click of a button.
How to toggle Notion spell check on and off?
You can enable or disable spell check in Notion by first double-clicking on the word that Notion thinks is incorrect. You will find a red colored curvy line under it. Next, right-click on the highlighted text and click on the “Disable spell check” option. This feature, however, is available only in the desktop or mobile app of Notion.
Does Notion have autocorrect?
While Notion does not automatically correct text the way you can in mobile texting, you can initiate an automatic correction of text by using Notion AI. To do that, double-click on the word/phrase that needs to be fixed, click on “Ask AI”, and then click on “Fix spelling & Grammar”.
